Police arrested 20 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Feb. 27 and Sunday; eight were involved in traffic accidents.

Police have made 250 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 248 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Kona officers arrested eight drivers, South Hilo officers arrested seven and Puna officers got three. South Kohala and Hamakua officers arrested one motorist in each district.

There have been 262 major accidents this year compared with 247 during the same period last year.

To date, police said there have been six traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with five fatalities during the same period in 2011.
